Stop On A Dime

One of the first activities at our Stop on a Dime presentation was running. Gwendolyn Gardener, Nicole Emanuel, Will Wilgenburg, and Trenton Vander Veen are demonstrating how hard it is to stop at the exact time they hear Officer Mitch blow his whistle.  Next, we watched the police car and police motorcycle leave skid marks on the basketball court, as they tried to stop at the whistle’s blow.  The K – 3rd grade students were also reminded to STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN before crossing a street.  Other safety issues that were discussed were wearing bike helmets, staying away from train tracks, and being aware of strangers. It was good to be reminded of these important safety habits.  Thank you, Hanford Police Department.   Mrs. Vander Moren

Kindergarten Safety Week

This year Kindergarten has been blessed with 20 wonderful students.  We began our year by reviewing our colors.  In an attempt to reinforce the colors each day, the students were asked to wear a certain color.  One of the only problems was that I, the teacher, had a difficult time remembering which color was which day.  Needless to say the students did an excellent job of remembering.  During this time we also began our unit on safety.  On Tuesday we enjoyed a visit from the fire department.  The following week we watched a “Stop on a Dime” presentation, met Gunner the police dog, and heard a 9-1-1 presentation from the police department.  Mrs. Schmidt

Safety Posters

Students in K – 3 were given a presentation on how and under what circumstances they should make a 911 call.  Russ Hilyard, father of Hannah and Sierra, was one of the presenters, along with an employee of the Kings County Sheriff Department Dispatch Unit.  Much discussion took place including many possible scenarios, with a a culminating activity of role playing an actual 911 call.  Each student received a pencil and coloring sheet at the end of the presentation.   Mrs. Verhoeven
